Heyy everyone! Read this story and let me know what you think: "A man I sponsor in A.A. confessed to killing a person in a hit-and-run. Should I turn him in?" http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100429183002AAQTito

I would encourage HIM to do the right thing. That's the only way he can atone and make peace with himself. What was told to you in confidence MUST be held in confidence.

Pray! Ask God to guide you. We must be willing to do whatever it takes to right our wrongs as long as it does not harm others.

Deirdre Deirdre said...

That would be an individual decision. Unless you're clergy or a doctor, you don't have a mandate to remain silent. And if it is your objective to do what results in the least harm to others, then revealing this to police may be the best, or only choice. It's wrong to reveal a crime like that to someone, hoping to find absolution, but in the long run troubling them. If you're going to disclose your crime, you need to be willing to take responsibility for it.

We left Athens today to go to a beach resort. What a mess! It is so sad; 2 years ago it was a nice city. Today is is filled with junkies on every corner and getting high in public, pickpockets, and theives. I guess Greece's hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil philosphy has finally caught up to them (in Athens at least).

What a day! I took 2 3rd steps, packed 2 bags, went on 4 (yes 4) trips to CVS, babysat 5 children (at one time, for 8 hours), helped 1 friend find clarity through a relapse, did 3 loads of laundry, and found out another friend is pregnant! Wow, it makes me tired just to type it! I think God gave me a full plate before I take off for Greece tomorrow night. What do you think?

"My Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on my soul the sinner." Monks in Greece repeat this prayer throughout their daily activities. The goal is to have your heart say the prayer rather than your brain. It is something that I have been striving for for years. It humbles me.

When we retire at night, we constructively review our day. Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid? Do we owe an apology? Have we kept something to ourselves which should be discussed with another person at once? Were we kind and loving toward all? What could we have done better? Were we thinking of ourselves most of the time? Or were we thinking of what we could do for others, of what we could pack into the stream of life? But we must be careful not to drift into worry, remorse or morbid reflection, for that would diminish our usefulness to others. After making our review we ask God's forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should be taken." Pg 86, AA Big Book

Seventh Step Prayer: "My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen." AA, BIG BOOK

Morning Meditation: On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all God gave us brains to use. Our thought-life will be placed on a much higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives. In thinking about our day we may face indecision. We may not be able to determine which course to take. Here we ask God for inspiration, an intuitive thought or a decision. we relax and take it easy. We don't struggle. We are often surprised how the right answers come after we have tried this for a while. What used to be the hunch or the occasional inspiration gradually becomes a working part of the mind. Being still inexperienced and having just made conscious contact with God, it is not probable that we are going to be inspired at all times. We might pay for this presumption in all sorts of absurd actions and ideas. Nevertheless, we find that our thinking will, as time passes, be more and more on the plane of inspiration. We come to rely upon it. We usually conclude the period of meditation with a prayer that we be shown all through the day what our next step is to be, that we be given whatever we need to take care of such problems. We ask especially for freedom from self-will, and are careful to make no request for ourselves only. We may ask for ourselves, however, if others will be helped. We are careful never to pray for our own selfish ends. Many of us have wasted a lot of time doing that and it doesn't work. You can easily see why. AA Big Book, PG 86
